10 tips on moving into college!
A week ago I left home and came to San Antonio! WHAT?! That is so crazy to me, it still hasn't hit me that I am in college. Instead of talking about my first week of UTSA, I will be giving out some tips to moving into college!
- Every college has move in days, mine was two day before I started class. But instead of arriving to your university the day of move in, I recommend getting there a few days early. I have family in San Antonio, so of course this is a little bit easier for me to do. But getting there a day or two early will make all the difference. My family and I were able to tour the city and enjoy a few relaxing days together. It was also helpful because we went and bought any last minute stuff that I had forgotten.
- Have a binder with all of your information in it. My mom put all of my records, documents, confidential matters, into this thick zip up binder. She put each separate paper into a little plastic sheet, to get them protected. I have yet to actually need any of those papers, but if I ever need any of them I know exactly where to find them.
- Make a checklist of the stuff you are bringing. I make checklists for every trip that I go on, so it was only natural that I made one for moving to a different city! I put the clothes I was bringing, school supplies, toiletries, and electronics. This will really help you out because as you are writing it up you realize what you have and what you still need.
- Bring enough clear storage boxes! I did not have enough of these, so when I was organizing I still had random stuff laying around my room!
- Buy an iron locker shelf. I currently do not have one, I need to get one, but my roommate does. She uses the locker shelf in her sink area and it creates a clutter free zone. She is able to stack things, which really clears up space.
- Buy a mini vacuum cleaner and a swiffer/mop. Having a clean room is very important to me, this past weekend I vacuumed and mopped my room, and you would be surprised how much dirt gets on the floor in just a week! Also: MAKE SURE YOU VACUUM AND MOP BEFORE DOING ANYTHING TO YOUR DORM!
- This is another cleaning tip. If you share a bathroom with your roommate, as do I, discuss when you guys will clean the bathroom. No one wants to be the one ALWAYS cleaning, so my roommate and I decided that we would alternate weekends on when to clean the bathroom. This way every weekend it will be cleaned but I will only have to do it once every two weeks!
- VELVET HANGERS! I recently have fallen in love with velvet hangers, but I didn't bring enough to school! Since I didn't have enough for all of my clothes I had to quickly go buy regular hangers, and the clothes fall off so so easily. Most places that sell them put the hangers into packs of 50. I bought mine at Marshalls, but I have also seen them at; TJ Maxx, the Container Store, Dillards, Ross, and Tuesday Morning.
- Get a mattress pad, seriously these make ALL the difference in your nights sleep, and in college you are gonna need it.
- Utilize your drawer space. Since my closet is pretty big most of my clothes fit in it. Im pretty sure all dorms come with a desk with drawers in it, mine came with 3 large ones. For the bottom two I put my t-shirts, shorts, socks, etc. in. With the top drawer I put all of my plates, water bottles and cutlery inside. A lot of people also like to lift their bed all the way up, I personally do not because I'd fall, but that is also another way to save space!
Well I hope whoever is reading this find it helpful! Have a great day!
